Fourth of July Flash Flood in the Guadalupe River

Marcio Giacomoni is a Full Professor in the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, and Construction Management at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). He joined UTSA in 2013 after receiving a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University. He holds a Master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering from the Institute of Hydraulics Research of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Brasilia, Brazil. His long-term goals are to develop and sustain a career as a teacher-scholar focused on methodologies that identify resilient and sustainable water management strategies for the built and natural environments, and to transform this knowledge into action by training the next generation of water planners and managers.

Dr. Giacomoni will discuss the recent flooding that occurred during the Fourth of July holiday in the Upper Guadalupe watershed, which resulted in a total of 135 confirmed deaths, with two people still missing. He will also describe the hydrologic/hydraulic and human factors that contributed to the unprecedented loss of life and property as well as the advancement in the use of artificial generative adversarial networks for rapid flood modeling.
